City Express by Marriott Osaka — A Mexican Hotel Brand Lands in Japan

A hotel brand that spent two decades expanding across Mexico and Latin America is making its Japan debut in April 2026. City Express by Marriott opens two properties in Osaka — joining Four Points Flex and SUGATA Hotel as the third Marriott Midscale brand to arrive in the city within the space of a year.

What Is City Express by Marriott?

City Express started life in Mexico in 2002 as Hoteles City Express, a mid-budget business hotel chain built for reliability and value. It grew quickly across Mexico and then into the wider Latin American market, earning a following among business travelers who wanted something consistent and affordable without sacrificing the basics.

Think of it as the Latin American equivalent of Toyoko Inn in Japan — a chain that business travelers return to because they know exactly what they’re getting in any city: a clean room, working Wi-Fi, a decent bed. No surprises, and that’s precisely the point.

Marriott acquired the brand in 2018 and brought it into the Bonvoy ecosystem. Now it’s crossing the Pacific for the first time — and Osaka is where it lands.

Midscale is Marriott’s most affordable Bonvoy-eligible tier. The pitch: international chain consistency and points accumulation at a price that won’t stretch your budget.

Two Hotels Opening in Osaka

Both are rebrands of existing hotels, not new builds. They open in April 2026.

City Express by Marriott Osaka Shin-Imamiya

City Express By Marriott Osaka Shin-Imamiya Twin Room

A rebrand of FP Hotels Namba Minami. The Shin-Imamiya area sits just south of Tennoji and has seen growing interest from international travelers in recent years — it’s a more authentic, less polished part of Osaka than the main tourist zones, with easy rail access to Namba, Shinsaibashi, and Tennoji (home to Abeno Harukas, Japan’s tallest building, and Tennoji Zoo).

City Express by Marriott Osaka Namba South

A renovation and rebrand of Hotel Blumen Hanazono Kita. Namba South puts you within walking distance of Dotonbori and Shinsaibashi — the commercial and tourist heart of Osaka. A straightforward location for both sightseeing and convenience.

How City Express Compares to the Other Marriott Midscale Options in Osaka

By spring 2026, Osaka will have three different Marriott Bonvoy brands in the Midscale tier. Here’s how they differ:

All three sit at the same Midscale price tier, but they feel quite different. City Express is the one that won’t let you down on the basics — clean room, working Wi-Fi, a bed you can actually sleep on. Four Points Flex is optimized for compact, efficient stays. SUGATA has its own design identity and a boutique feel. The choice comes down to what you’re prioritizing: reliability, efficiency, or character.

Marriott Bonvoy

City Express is fully integrated into Marriott Bonvoy, so stays earn points that can be redeemed across the entire Bonvoy portfolio — Ritz-Carlton, Sheraton, Courtyard, and everything in between. Bonvoy membership is free and can be set up at the time of booking.

Who Should Stay Here

Good fit if you:

  • Want to earn or spend Marriott Bonvoy points at a budget-friendly rate
  • Prefer the predictability of an international chain over a boutique hotel
  • Are based in the Shin-Imamiya / Tennoji area or the Namba South area
  • Already know City Express from stays in Mexico or Latin America
