India is one of the most significant emerging markets for Japan-bound travel. With 1.4 billion people, a fast-growing middle class, a large Indian diaspora in Japan, and deep business ties between Indian IT companies and Japanese corporations, the India–Japan aviation corridor has been steadily growing. Japan has also been actively courting Indian tourists, relaxing visa conditions and opening tourism offices.

The 2025–2026 period marks a step change for India–Japan direct flights: Japan Airlines launched a new Delhi service in January 2026, becoming the first Japanese carrier to directly operate India–Japan since ANA's historical routes. Air India is expanding with a new Mumbai–Haneda service in June 2026. These additions significantly improve connectivity, reducing reliance on one-stop routing via Southeast Asian hubs.

This page covers direct routes between India and Japan launched or resumed from 2023 onwards.

Jump to departure city: Delhi (DEL) | Mumbai (BOM)

From Delhi — Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL)

Indira Gandhi International Airport (IATA: DEL) is India's largest airport by passenger volume, handling flights for the capital region of some 30 million people. For India–Japan travel, Delhi is the primary gateway on the Indian side, served by both Air India and — since January 2026 — Japan Airlines, making it the best-connected Indian city to Japan.

Airlines to Japan from Delhi

Japan Airlines (日本航空 / JAL)
Japan's flag carrier and Oneworld Alliance member. Japan Airlines launched Delhi–Narita direct service in January 2026 — a landmark route that marks JAL's return to direct India operations after a long absence. The route operates the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, offering JAL's Business Class (JAL Sky Suite), Premium Economy, and Economy cabins.

JAL's entry into the Delhi–Tokyo market reflects the airline's strategic reassessment of the India corridor. The bilateral Japan–India relationship has strengthened considerably, with significant Japanese corporate investment in India (Toyota, Honda, Suzuki, Sony, Panasonic all have major Indian operations), Japanese government support for Indian infrastructure projects, and growing leisure tourism in both directions.

For Delhi travelers, JAL provides a Japanese-carrier option with full-service amenities, Japanese cuisine, and seamless connections via Narita to Japan's domestic network (including Sapporo, Osaka, Fukuoka, Okinawa and beyond via JAL codeshares). The route also benefits business travelers between India's capital and Tokyo's financial and corporate districts.
Air India (エア・インディア)
India's national carrier, recently privatized and relaunched under the Tata Group (acquisition completed 2022). Air India operates Delhi–Narita (Tokyo) as part of its international network restoration and expansion program under its new ownership. The Tata Group acquisition brought significant investment in new aircraft orders (Airbus A350, Boeing 787), fleet renewal, and service improvements.

Air India's Delhi–Tokyo route connects India's capital with the world's most populous metropolitan area. The flight is operated on wide-body aircraft with Business Class and Economy options. Air India also provides the onward connection within India from Narita via its domestic network — relevant for Japanese travelers visiting India, and for Indian passengers making onward connections to Narita from Air India's Indian domestic hubs.

From Mumbai — Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM)

Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (IATA: BOM) is India's financial capital gateway — the city of some 20 million people is home to Bollywood, India's stock exchange, and the headquarters of major Indian corporations. A large number of Indian corporate travelers to Japan depart from Mumbai. Air India's new Haneda service in June 2026 will provide direct access to central Tokyo without changing planes.

Airlines to Japan from Mumbai

Air India (エア・インディア) — Mumbai to Haneda
Air India's new Mumbai–Haneda service launching in June 2026 opens the first direct link between India's financial capital and Tokyo Haneda Airport. Haneda is Tokyo's closer airport — well-connected to central Tokyo via monorail and Keikyu railway — and has significantly expanded its international slots in recent years, making it increasingly attractive for long-haul carriers.

Mumbai–Haneda fills an important gap for the Indian business travel market. Mumbai-based executives in finance, consulting, and technology can now reach Tokyo's Marunouchi business district or Shinjuku corporate towers without the time penalty of routing through Delhi or a Southeast Asian hub. Air India will operate wide-body aircraft on the route.

The route also taps into Mumbai's Indian diaspora community with family and cultural ties to Japan, and growing leisure interest in Japan from western India. Mumbai has a large Japanese expatriate community (including the nearby Pune IT corridor) that benefits from direct access to Japan.
