Malaysia and Japan share deep economic and cultural ties — the "Look East Policy" initiated by Malaysia in the 1980s positioned Japan as a model for Malaysian industrial development, and the relationship has deepened over four decades. Today Japan is one of Malaysia's most popular holiday destinations, while Malaysia is a significant tourism source for Japan.

Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL/KLIA) serves as the sole hub for Malaysia–Japan direct flights. The market is served by two complementary carriers: Malaysia Airlines for the full-service segment and AirAsia X for the budget market — a clean duopoly that covers the full range of traveler needs. Japan's appeal to Malaysians spans food tourism, anime culture, seasonal experiences (cherry blossoms, autumn leaves, snow), and shopping, keeping demand consistently strong year-round.

This page covers routes to Japan launched or resumed from 2023 onwards.

From Kuala Lumpur — Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL/KLIA)

Kuala Lumpur International Airport (IATA: KUL), located in Sepang, Selangor, is Malaysia's primary international gateway and one of Southeast Asia's major aviation hubs. KLIA handles Malaysia Airlines' full-service operations from the main terminal (KLIA), while AirAsia and AirAsia X operate from the adjacent klia2 terminal. Both airports are well-connected to Kuala Lumpur city by the KLIA Ekspres rail link.

Airlines to Japan

Malaysia Airlines (マレーシア航空)
Malaysia's flag carrier, a Oneworld Alliance member and one of Southeast Asia's most established full-service airlines. Malaysia Airlines restored its Japan network progressively from 2022, with full recovery of its core routes to Tokyo (both Narita and Haneda), Osaka (Kansai), Nagoya, and seasonal Sapporo service by 2023.

Malaysia Airlines operates Airbus A350 widebody aircraft on Japan routes, offering Business Class (with lie-flat seats), Premium Economy, and Economy. The airline's Japan service is particularly popular among Malaysian business travelers and high-spending leisure travelers who prioritize comfort on this roughly 7-hour flight. Japan is consistently among Malaysia Airlines' top revenue international markets.

The airline's codeshare with Japan Airlines (both Oneworld members) extends connectivity from Narita and Haneda to Japan's domestic network, making it easy for KUL travelers to access regional Japanese cities beyond the gateways.
AirAsia X (エアアジアX)
The long-haul arm of the AirAsia Group, operating medium and long-haul budget flights from Kuala Lumpur's klia2 terminal. AirAsia X resumed its Japan network in 2023 and has been expanding it — Narita, Kansai, Fukuoka, Okinawa, and Nagoya form the core, with Sapporo seasonal service restarted in 2024 and Sendai added as a new destination in 2025.

AirAsia X flies Airbus A330 widebody aircraft on Japan routes, with Premium Flatbed (business class equivalent) and Economy cabins. Its frequent sales make Japan accessible to Malaysian budget travelers — fares on promotion can significantly undercut full-service carriers. The Okinawa route appeals to Malaysians for tropical beach vacations, while Sapporo attracts winter sports and snow season visitors.

Kuala Lumpur–Sendai (2025): AirAsia X's new Sendai service brings direct LCC access from Southeast Asia to Tohoku, one of Japan's most underexplored regions for international visitors. Sendai is the gateway to Matsushima Bay (one of Japan's three most scenic views), the Zao Fox Village, the Yamadera cliff temple, and the Tohoku shinkansen network. For Malaysians who have already visited the major cities, this opens a new Japan itinerary without a domestic transfer.
