Vietnam's first privately-owned commercial airline, VietJet Air has grown explosively since its 2011 launch to become one of Southeast Asia's largest LCCs. Japan is VietJet's most important international market, and the airline has been systematically adding Japan routes from Hanoi since the pandemic recovery began.
Hanoi–Sendai (2024): VietJet Air's Sendai service opened a direct LCC link from Vietnam's capital to Tohoku for the first time. Sendai hosts a significant Vietnamese community (students and technical interns at Tohoku universities and manufacturing facilities), and the route serves both the diaspora-visit segment and growing Vietnamese leisure tourism to northern Japan.
Hanoi–Shizuoka (April 2026): VietJet Air's new Shizuoka service is strategically significant. Fuji Shizuoka Airport (FSZ) — sometimes marketed as "Mt. Fuji Shizuoka Airport" — gives travelers direct access to central Japan's premier attraction (Mt. Fuji), the Izu Peninsula, Hamamatsu (Honda's home), and the broader Tokai region without transiting Tokyo or Osaka. For Vietnamese travelers with a specific Mt. Da Nang is Vietnam's third-largest city, a coastal resort hub popular for its beaches, the Marble Mountains, Hội An, and Bà Nà Hills.
