Vietnam has one of the most rapidly growing outbound aviation markets in Southeast Asia, and Japan is its most popular long-haul destination. The combination of a young population, rising middle class, large Vietnamese diaspora in Japan (over 500,000 residents, making it the third-largest immigrant group after Chinese and Korean), and deep cultural affinity between Vietnamese and Japanese aesthetics drives remarkable demand on this corridor.

The Vietnam–Japan market is distinctive for its density of departure cities: Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Da Nang all operate direct Japan services, giving travelers across Vietnam relatively local options. VietJet Air has been the most aggressive carrier in expanding the network, while Vietnam Airlines provides the full-service backbone. The opening of new Shizuoka routes in April 2026 brings yet another Japanese gateway to Vietnamese travelers.

This page covers routes launched or resumed from 2023 onwards.

Noi Bai International Airport (IATA: HAN) serves Hanoi, Vietnam's capital, and is the country's second-busiest airport by passenger volume. Hanoi is the primary departure hub for northern Vietnam–Japan travel and is served by the greatest number of carriers and Japan destinations.

Airlines to Japan from Hanoi

Vietnam Airlines (ベトナム航空)
Vietnam's flag carrier and a SkyTeam Alliance member. Vietnam Airlines restored its Hanoi Japan network from 2022, with Narita and Kansai restored first, followed by Fukuoka, Nagoya, and Okinawa. The airline operates Airbus A350 and Boeing 787 widebody aircraft on Japan routes, offering Business Class, Premium Economy, and Economy cabins.

Vietnam Airlines serves the full-service segment of Vietnam–Japan travel, catering to business travelers, Vietnamese diaspora returning home to Japan, and the growing affluent leisure market. Japan is consistently among Vietnam Airlines' most profitable international routes given the deep bilateral ties — over 500,000 Vietnamese residents live in Japan, largely on work visas in manufacturing, agriculture, and services.
VietJet Air (ベトジェット・エア)
Vietnam's first privately-owned commercial airline, VietJet Air has grown explosively since its 2011 launch to become one of Southeast Asia's largest LCCs. Japan is VietJet's most important international market, and the airline has been systematically adding Japan routes from Hanoi since the pandemic recovery began.

Hanoi–Sendai (2024): VietJet Air's Sendai service opened a direct LCC link from Vietnam's capital to Tohoku for the first time. Sendai hosts a significant Vietnamese community (students and technical interns at Tohoku universities and manufacturing facilities), and the route serves both the diaspora-visit segment and growing Vietnamese leisure tourism to northern Japan.

Hanoi–Shizuoka (April 2026): VietJet Air's new Shizuoka service is strategically significant. Fuji Shizuoka Airport (FSZ) — sometimes marketed as "Mt. Fuji Shizuoka Airport" — gives travelers direct access to central Japan's premier attraction (Mt. Fuji), the Izu Peninsula, Hamamatsu (Honda's home), and the broader Tokai region without transiting Tokyo or Osaka. For Vietnamese travelers with a specific Mt. Fuji or central Japan itinerary, this route is a major convenience.
Bamboo Airways (バンブー・エアウェイズ)
Vietnam's youngest major carrier, backed by FLC Group and launched in 2019. Bamboo Airways resumed Hanoi–Narita service in 2023, adding another option for Hanoi travelers on the main Tokyo corridor. The airline operates a mixed fleet including Boeing 787 Dreamliners on Japan routes, with Business Class and Economy cabins.

From Ho Chi Minh City — Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN)

Tan Son Nhat International Airport (IATA: SGN) is Vietnam's busiest airport, serving Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), the commercial capital and largest city. Southern Vietnam's Japan connections are anchored by Vietnam Airlines and VietJet Air, with routes to Tokyo, Osaka, and Okinawa.

From Da Nang — Da Nang International Airport (DAD)

Da Nang is Vietnam's third-largest city, a coastal resort hub popular for its beaches, the Marble Mountains, Hội An, and Bà Nà Hills. Japan is a major source of tourists for Da Nang, and Da Nang Airport (IATA: DAD) benefits from direct Japan connections that avoid the Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City transit.

Kansai / Osaka (KIX) VietJet Air 2024 — new service
Narita / Tokyo (NRT) Vietnam Airlines Seasonal service — check airline for schedule
Da Nang's direct Japan routes serve two distinct traveler flows: Vietnamese from central Vietnam traveling to Japan for work, study, or leisure; and Japanese tourists arriving directly in Da Nang for beach holidays, resort stays, and Hội An cultural visits without routing through Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City.
